Early Christians thought that Jesus wants people who didn't believe his story to be tortured after they die. Then Christians believed everyone goes to heaven until you hear Jesus story and the Bible. After hearing about Jesus story and a person doesn't believe it's true, then Jesus wants that person to be tortured after they die. Christianity has evolved and in the late 1700's Christians realized Jesus wouldn't torture anybody. Then they coined the term Christian Universalism. Christians now believe everyone goes to heaven. Jesus died for the sins of the World. There are still some Christians that believe Jesus wants people tortured after they die. Some Christians believe Jesus wants people tortured for an eternity. The Inquisition was a powerful office set up within the Catholic Church to root out and punish heresy throughout Europe and the Americas. Beginning in the 12th century and continuing for hundreds of years, the Inquisition is infamous for the severity of its tortures and its persecution of Jews and Muslims. Pope Alexander VI issued The Papal Bull "Inter Caetera" in 1493. It played a central role in the conquest of the New World. The Bull stated that any land not inhabited by Christians was available to be "discovered," claimed, and exploited by Christian rulers and declared that "the Catholic faith and the Christian religion be exalted and be everywhere increased and spread, that the health of souls be cared for and that barbarous nations be overthrown and brought to the faith itself."
In 1600 the church burned Giordano Bruno at the stake. He was a scientist and philosopher who said the sun was the center of the universe in contrast to the church's teachings of an Earth-centered universe. He also believed in a universe with numerous inhabited worlds that was infinite across.
